We have been going through a sermon series in 1st & 2nd Kings at church. When looking at the endless cycle of kings who “did right in the sight of the Lord” and those who “did evil in the sight of the Lord”, it made me think of this poem I wrote in Eugene, OR in my time of intensely searching for the truth.
What I find interesting is that, at the time, I had never read the Biblical accounts of the Kings of Israel ...
A Story of Kings
If someone should suddenly ask me
For words of wisdom to share
I would tell them the story of a King.
With greed in his heart, he claimed everything
He looked upon his subjects
With an arrogant glare.
—
With the devil’s hand
He ruled his land
Death was the nod of his head.
He played with the jewels
He had taken from fools
An endless stream of maidens
at his bed.
—
He massed his army
Of murderers and thieves,
They conquered all in sight.
Onward, across the lands they trod,
Looting and killing
In the name of their God.
It seemed nothing could stop
His bloody might.
—
But, unto this king was born a son,
The light of truth shone in his eyes.
He looked upon his father with utter contempt,
For he knew that love and truth
Would conquer his evil lies.
—
Well, the old king finally passed away,
And a Spring spirit filled the air.
Rejoice, rejoice, we have a new king,
The peasants began to dance and sing,
Their hearts and souls were saved from despair.
—
Everyone loved this new King of Kings,
A Savior of God, they shouted his name.
He taught them to love and respect,
His hand out to give, never collect.
Their lives would never be quite the same.
—
With a gentle hand, he ruled his land,
And through the years they prospered well.
Heaven on earth, everyone said,
But the fires of wealth were sparked in their heads,
How soon they forgot that once this was hell.
—
The old king looked back on his life.
He saw that his work was honest and fair.
But, unknown to him, his task was not done,
For unto this king was born a son,
His eyes bore an arrogant glare.
